Timeline of UVA Events Before and After White House Executive Orders

  • November 17, 2016. The Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS) and the International Studies Office (ISO) hold a Town Hall for international students and scholars who are concerned about changes to immigration policies and practices following the presidential election. Presenters include UVA’s office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity and state-appointed external counsel on immigration.
  • November 18, 2016. UVA officials and state-appointed external counsel on immigration meet with affected students.
  • December 6, 2016. ISO sends FAQ to all international students with information concerning potential changes to immigration policies and related resources for students.
  • January 27, 2017. UVA leaders meet with affected students to welcome them back for the spring semester and to offer ongoing support.
  • January 27, 2017. White House issues Executive Order “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States.”
  • January 27-29, 2017. ISO staff remain in communication with students, faculty, staff to address concerns related to the White House Executive Order.
  • January 29, 2017. University Human Resources (UHR) sends an email to the University's foreign national employee community.
  • January 29, 2017. UVA President Teresa Sullivan and Executive Vice President and Provost Tom Katsouleas issue a statement to the University community about the White House Executive Order.
  • Janury 30, 2017. ISO updates FAQ on immigration enforcement and travel.
  • February 1, 2017. ISO updates FAQ on immigration enforcement and travel.

  • February 7, 2017. ISO holds town hall. Immigration Attorney Mark Rhoads and representatives from the ISO, Student Affairs, Office of the General Counsel, Human Resources, Office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity, Diversity Office, and Student Health offered updates on the interpretation and implementation of the recent executive orders, provided recommendations, and responded to questions and concerns.

  • March 7, 2017. ISO updates FAQ on immigration enforcement and travel.
  • March 16, 2017. ISO updates FAQ on immigration enforcement and travel.
  • March 20, 2017. ISO send survey on the impact of the Executive Orders and Immigration Memos the entire international student and scholar community. UHR send ssimilar survey to interntional faculty and staff.
  • April 4, 2017. ISO, Student Affairs, and UHR host town hall #3 with guest speaker Immigration Attorney Mark Rhoads.
  • April 20, 2017. ISO and UHR update statements on immigration enforcement and travel.
  • July 3, 2017. ISO updates information on immigration enforment and travel.
